Raymond E. Kiefhaber, M.D., passed away peacefully at the Middletown home that he and his beloved wife, JeanAnne, built in 1966. Throughout his incredible life, he answered to many names: Dr. Kiefhaber, Ray, Dad, Pop, and Senator.
Dr. Kiefhaber (Ray) established his orthopaedic surgery practice in 1960 and served his patients with skill and compassion for 50 years. He loved his work for the challenges that it presented, but mostly for the genuine relationships that he developed with patients, colleagues, community members, and friends. Ray showed a true interest in everyone that he met and was quick to recognize and appreciate their best qualities.
In addition to his practice, Dr. Kiefhaber supported the medical community as a Middletown Regional Hospital board trustee for 27 years. He served on the boards of the Atrium Medical Center Foundation and Hospice Care of Middletown until his death.
Among his many community honors were the 2022 Physician Hero Award from the Atrium Medical Center Foundation and the 2016 Roland P. Ely Jr. President’s Award from the Middletown Community Foundation. Together, Ray and JeanAnne demonstrated their generosity to the community in many ways, including the donation of two prominent sculptures to Atrium Medical Center.
To his two grateful children, Tom (Jan) and Anne (Willis), he was "Dad"—an outstanding role model and a constant source of support. Though his demanding medical practice occasionally kept him from childhood events, he more than made up for it as "Pop" to his three adoring grandchildren, Kate (Dave), Tom (Jenni), and Lex (Cailin), and his six great-grandchildren, Millie, Ray, Grace, William, Rye and Lola, all of whom had the great good fortune of knowing him well.
To his closest friends-and most especially to Jean Anne, the love of his life for 73 years- he was "Senator"—a lifelong nickname given to him while in medical school.
Generous, loving, and highly distinguished, Dr. Kiefhaber’s presence will be deeply missed, but his impact on his family, friends, and the Middletown community will endure.
Please join us for a brief celebration of Ray’s life – a time to remember the remarkable man who meant so much to so many.
